Restoring the Greenheart Reserve

The Greenheart Reserve is a 2.5 ha right in the centre of town. Originally intended as a recreation reserve and greenspace for town it was planted with exotic tree species such as Douglas Fir, Larch and Silver Birch. It is more a woodblock than reserve now days.

In 2007 Tuatapere Community Board identified the need to fell these exotic tree species and replace with desirable natives and open space suitable for rest and recreation.

The project began in 2008 with the repair and upgrade of the derelict foot bridge over boundary creek from Orawia Rd. This provides valuable walking access to the site.

The river banks on both sides of Boundary Creek were cleared of weed tree species (willows) etc. The area was chip mulched and a 2 year spraying programme initiated in preparation for the commencement of planting in 2011.

In planting the Greenheart Tuatapere & Districts Promotions Inc has identified that this area has significant bio-diversity value in that it links many ancient beech forest remnants together into one continuos bird corridor and forest. The adjoining forest is a stronghold for the nationally threatened plant - Red Misteltoe (Peraxilla colensoi), which is a parasitic plant that grows high in Southern Beech trees.

Tuatapere and District Promotions Inc is working in partnership with the Community Board to develop a planting plan that brings maximum benefit to locals, attracts tourists and encourages them to stop, and enhances bio-diversity in the area. This will be done in conjuction with the Plant Tuatapere Crimson Rata Project incorporating Southern Rata into the plantings.
